Since someone asked..

I went to the show last night, the make up gig for the first night. After my total anger of finding out the TUesday show was canceled, and I was forced to miss a Matthew Sweet concert last night, because that is when the Roses played their make up show, I was expecting one hell of a show. The bad news is, I couldn't get my DAT recorder in, sorry guys ;(

The good news is, the Roses were pretty decent. Ian didn't say much except say the crowd wasn't dancing around enough. The set list consisted of 6 or so old songs from the first CD, which surprised the hell out of me. Most of the songs came out really well...with the exception of "Begging You" which was kind of flat, and "Love Spreads" which just bit.

I guess they were just tired of playing it. They didn't close with Love Spreads as I had raead in other reviews, and they played an ENCORE. Can you believe it? Wow. I wqas surprised. The show was probably about 100 minutes or so, and pretty entertaining. I was blown away by the bassist. I talked to him the night before after the Tuesday show and he seemed like a very nice guy. The Tuesday the show was cancelled we saw Ian in the bus rather intoxicated and hitting on band whores of DC.

Pretty funny stuff. Well, thats my review (though its not a very good one I suppose)

Well, the Stone Roses FINALLY played DC last night (Wednesday). It was great seeing their first headlining concert in America. The set list was the same as the Paris show that was in the digest the other day. In other words, they played an encore with FOOL'S GOLD!! I was completely psyched!

The show was pretty damn good! There were a few too many glitches with the sound for my liking (the band members were constantly yelling at their roadie). The crowd was okay; they didn't seem to be completely familiar with the Stone Roses repertoire. Highlights included She Bangs, Resurrection, Made of Stone, Driving South (Squire is unbelievable), Beggin' You, and Fools Gold. They played for 90 minutes. And yes, there isn't a whole bunch of bonding between band and audience, and yes, Ian's voice isn't always right on, but for a fan, those facts don't really matter. New drummer is great (thumpin', as one concert-goer announced).

The night before, when they cancelled their original show, I accidently ran into Ian Brown (w/Mani) sittin' in their bus in Georgetown U parking lot. Ian informed me that they are NOT playing Letterman on the 23rd, as was originally posted in alt.music.alternative. Ian was really cool, pleasant to talk with, and seemed genuinely sorry they had to cancel the original show.

So, for the rest of you Stone Roses fans, get those tickets and see an amazing band live!!

Overall, I have to admit, I've seen better concerts. But, if you're a big roses fan, it's not one you want to miss. Considering this is their first US tour (i think), this is a must go situation. I give it an A+, but my friend who went and doesn't like the roses didn't think the $25 was worth it. Anyway - my concert review breakdown:

Ian is pretty much as bad ass as i thought he would be. Didn't give a shit about shit. The tough boy manc attitude man. Squire was sort o far away from me, but he didn't do much. Mani was the big man of the night. We met him earlier, and he put us on his guest list and got us in free. He was throwing out picks and giving out beers, and most definitely the most down to earth. Reni got the boot, of course, and they had some Living Colour looking drummer guy who i thought could have been much better.

As for the songs - I'm always disappointed by bands who play live exactly like they play the album. Almost every song could have easily been the album played slower, same solos and all. They played an extended (~15min) version of daybreak, which was longer than it should have been. Resurrection most definitely should have been drawn out to some type of improvisation, but it was real close to the first album version, except the drummer had a real bad sound. Not that it was bad, because Resurrection still ROCKS.

Anyway - the concert needed more hard core roses fans, i bet half the people thought the roses actually has a black drummer with long dread locks. So - you roses fans out there, get your butt over to your city's venue and hang around for tickets - whoknows, maybe Mani will come out for a smoke and put you on the guest list.

Make sure you know who he is, tho, because a LOT of people stood around thinking who the FUCK is that?
