Went to the concert at Sydney's Enmore Theatre, and I was blown away!
For $30 Aus to see them live I would have been delighted if they turned up and played a few songs, and pissed off again. But they honoured my small contribution with a kaleidescopic, mesmerising light show, a brilliant mix, and TWO hours of pure bliss to the ears! I would pay $300 to experience that again!

John Sqiure has to be seen live to be understood. This guy is a legendary composer, and a genius with the guitar. On the downside, Ian Brown's crystal voice was off key more often than not. I can only assume jetlag, as they wouldn't have played for two hours if they were the type of guys who get wasted and don't care if it wrecks the show. It doesn't change the fact that if you're a fan, or even if you're not, you can't pass through this lifetime without experiencing the Stone Roses live.

Subject: ROSES: Re:Roses Sydney gig

After spending all week giggling like a little kid waiting for the chance to see the Roses for the first time, I was not dissapointed!

Someone expressed concern a few weeks back that the Enmore Theatre's all seating arrangement would be a downer. But there are always ways to get around things. Fortunately, the Enmore has fold up seats and virtually everyone was standing and there is a smallish standing area just in front of the stage as well as the aisles.

Anyway, the band did the same set they've been doing in Japan and elsewhere in Australia and, my wasn't it good! The music was brilliant from the start and never faltered. Personally I can't find anything in Robbie to fault unless you take the line that he isn't (and never will be) Reni. He's certainly different to Reni (although I've only heard bootleg live stuff of his) but that's not necessarily bad. Reni had such a distinctive (and great) style but it did scream 1989 and Robbie may broaden the band's sound and approach.

Yes, Ian did sound pretty dodgy to start with but what he lacks for in consistency is made up for with cool. Who else looks so comfortable on stage and wears sunglasses while singing. And fie upon those who don't like his "holier then thou" approach! Don't they know that all the best singers/frontmen are incorigable posers? Anyway, he did start to hit a few notes by midway through the set and on both Tears and Good Times here sounded superb.

Both Mani and John were flying, too. John was his quiet self while Mani joked around with the crowd in the front few rows. The band as whole seemed in pretty good humour. Ian picked up someone's camera and took a few snaps of the band. John did an axe-god/wank act for the camera, Robbie showed off, Mani pulled a daft face and Ian took pictures of himself singing.

I think one reason the band were happy was the behaviour of the crowd. They got right into the music, danced pretty much constantly and their was NO stage-diving or ridiculous moshing. I wasn't right up the front, but there seemed to be a great vibe in the crowd all round. The English back-packing crowd were very well represented, with Mani asking "Are there any Australians here tonight?".

I haven't seen the article in The Australian about the Brisbane show that someone referred too, but I personally think that of any printed publication in the world, it's the last one I would take any notice of in regards to anything musical (or probably anything in general!). If Linda Jaivin wrote it it's only one more reason to hate her guts. Stupid tart. (Rant over).

Anyway, I'm off to murder the ex-friend who buggered up the tickets for the second night.

Re: Stone Roses gigs at Enmore.

What do you mean they were a disappointment - they were bloody brilliant. I went both nights and although I was a little saddened that they didn't swap their songs around so much in the second night they were just mind boggling. The light show was great - what is your problem?

Mani was just as funny as ever, and Ian was just the fantastic cool we always wanted him to be

Mani gave us a beer and Ian took photos of himself and the band with audiences cameras. Hi to the lollipop girls!

John Squire look like a bit of a wanker on the first night but he took off that stupid hat off on the second night. The songs were so uplifting - it was like I was in heaven (if there is one let them play "I wanna be Adored"!

Cheers lads for the best gig of the year! And if they are coming into your area please do not miss them because they are the most fantastic band around - I love them more than ever now! Also cheers to the crowd who absolutely brilliant, singing along and no attitude!
