The first song i heard from the Roses was "She bangs the drums", in an alternative radio in Brazil, back in '89. I kept singing the song to me, but at the time I didn't look further for the band, I didn't even knew their name.
Second, "Elephant Stone". I heard it in a friends place, his old brother had just bought the vynil 'The Stone Roses'. I was surprised to see that that music I heard before was theirs. Still, I still didn't listen to the others, just asked him to tape those two for me (stupid bastard!!).
Back in '93, a friend of mine bought the CD version of 'The Stone Roses'. This time I couldnt resist and I got it for me. I was a goner since then. "Waterfall", "Don't stop", "This is the one", and the fucking brilliant "I am the resurrection" had elements that were fresh, nothing like the usual radio bollocks. I was petrified.
Some years later a friend of mine who was abroad brought 'Turns into Stone'. I still dont have that one, even though i have it on tape. "Mersey Paradise", "One Love", "Something Burning", "Fools gold".. The Roses had no end to their power! "Where angels play" still brings to my mind landscapes like nobody else does.
Then I was at a friends and he mentioned "Ive just got the latest Roses' album!". Strangely enough, even though I thought they were unmatchable, none of my friends was touched. I can still count in one hand the people I know who like the Roses. But, I got home 'Second Coming' and started listening to it. Well, it was a different Roses. They had moved, and farther from their origin. It's not that the music was bad. "Breaking into Heaven", "Ten Storey Love Song", "Daybreak", "Tears", they are my top listenings any day. But it was a bit disappointing, since i expected the roses to bring to me what we lack so much these days. News.
Then I signed this list. Throughout the last years I've joined and left many lists, but this is the one I always held on to. You people are awesome. Thanks for the all the stories and input.
One Love Story is a cute thing.. One more for the dreamers. I enjoyed reading it, I was always hooked in good stories. But I dont see any real depth on it further than BW's self-merchandising.
And now it all came to and end. It's a bit sad, but noone can take what they changed in me, and i hope nobody will take my cds away! :) I also hope that the list will go on, even though it won't be a newslist anymore. More like nostalgia..
Unless BW is right, of course.
