The politico pop event of the year must surely be at International 2 on Bank Holiday Monday 30 May. It's the first of two benefits to help finance the fight against the infamous Clause 29 (aka Clause 27 and 28) of the Local Government Bill. Brookside's Dean Sullivan (Jimmy Corkhill) is the compere, whilst James and The Stone Roses provide the music.
With their second LP, 'Strip Mine', on hold until September, James should be all fired-up to tumble, flicker and occasionally fly! Try and grasp that sense of wonder in the intimate glow of their invigorating music. 'Elephant Stove' is the imminent release from those unloveable mop-tops, The Stone Roses. It's a fine display of their tuneful, but spikey, '60s/'80s groove. Their exciting drummer and charismatic singer make them one of the most impre-ssive 'live' bands around.
It's cheap, and for such an important cause. Clause 29 is not just an issue for lesbians and gay men, it's a clear attack on fundamental human rights. So get down to Plymouth Grove and no excuses. Also look out for a second benefit gig featuring the Railway Children and Brilliant Corners at the Hacienda. Both, for musical and political reasons, are unmissable.
