BLOODY PREDICTABLE WHAT HYPE? CHART ENTRY OF THE WEEK
THE STONE ROSES 'One Love' (Silvertone)

If this record really does gatecrash the number one spot the moment it's unleashed it'll be final proof that the Roses no longer need to try at all. Responsible for the theory behind just about half the singles on this page, the Roses have now grown so much diversity from their soaring bubblegum pop of yore that they've completely reinvented themselves, as well as the music industry.

'One Love' is one long, shimmery John Squire guitar work out, with that long, maraca-thwacking groove inherited from 'Fools Gold'. The seductive opening - Brown's breathy vocals melting into those godkissed strings -- flows into a barely discernible chorus that is this year's Woodstock peace 'n' lurve vibe.
It will resound all summer, and the breeze caused by a nation of flare wearers lolling about to its lazy, hazy beat should be enough to counter any Greenhouse effect we may be experiencing. And we all know where the sun will be shining from, don't we kids?
